American writer Paul Auster has cancer

Paul Auster’s wife announced Saturday that the American writer, best known for his novels about New York and his marginal characters lost in life, has cancer.

Siri Hastvit, also a writer, reported on Instagram that the 76-year-old novelist is currently being treated at the Memorial Sloan Ketrin Cancer Center in New York.

She wrote: “My husband was diagnosed with cancer in December after having been ill for several months prior.” And she continued, “I live in a place I have come to call Cancer Country.”

And she continued, “Many crossed its borders, whether because they themselves were or were ill, or because a loved one, a relative, child, spouse or friend, had or had cancer.”

Paul Auster has more than thirty books translated into more than forty languages.

In 1982, he became known for his novel “Innovation of Isolation”, which is more like an autobiography in which he tries to clarify the features of his father’s personality.

He achieved international fame in 1983 with his novel “The New York Trilogy”, which was inspired by the police novel genre.

His wife didn’t say what type of cancer he had and wrote, “Living with someone who has cancer and is undergoing bursts of chemotherapy and immunotherapy is an adventure in intimacy and distance,” adding, “It’s not always easy to walk this tightrope.”
