US football mourns the loss of Bud Grant. The former Minnesota Vikings head coach died Saturday at the age of 95. This was announced by his long-standing club.
In 1969, Grant coached Minnesota to the NFL title and a place in Super Bowl IV, but lost to Kansas City. It was the last Super Bowl before the American Football League merged with the NFL and ushered in the modern era of professional American football (AFL).
Grant then led the Vikings to the Super Bowl three more times, losing to Miami (1973), Pittsburgh (1974), and Oakland (1976). He became the first coach to lose four Super Bowls.
Prior to his time in the NFL, Grant was also active in the US professional league NBA. In 1950, the reserve player was part of the Minneapolis Lakers’ championship team. In 1951, Grant ended his basketball career and began his second career with the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL as a defensive end and wide receiver.
