Pyongyang –
A number of former female soldiers North Korea (North Korea) revealed their bitter and dark experiences while joining the communist regime’s military. Apart from calling the North Korean military cruel and merciless, former North Korean female soldiers also told of the inhumane treatment they experienced.
As reported Radio Free AsiaSaturday (11/3/2023), one of the former North Korean soldiers named Kim Dan Geum, who joined the military Pyongyang at the age of 17 or immediately after he graduated from high school. Kim said her reason for joining was to get a better life.
Joining the military is known to be one way to gain membership in the Workers’ Party of Korea, which in turn opens up many opportunities and privileges such as increased food rations, more jobs and higher salaries.
Kim told how he was initially amazed when he saw the female soldiers who were so beautiful wearing their military uniforms. But the admiration disappeared after Kim joined Korean People’s ArmyNorth Korea’s official military name.
“When you join, you can’t think of yourself as a young woman. There’s no time to dress up (and put on makeup). It’s very cold in Pyongyang, and I have to work in the biting wind. I have to drill holes in the ice to wash my hair and clothes,” Kim said.
“I was hungry all the time. The food rations were not enough. The food was a bowl of rice with cabbage soup and some radish and pickled cabbage,” said Kim, reminiscing about her past.
“Also, we didn’t get sanitary pads, instead they gave us one meter long gauze, which I cut into four pieces to use, even wash and reuse. Even as officers, we didn’t get pads,” he said.
