Anti-Covid flowers and roots

Work on wild plants is a timely reminder that nature is a great ally of human health and that preserving ecosystems is fundamental (Scientific Reports, January 2023). By sifting through more than 1,800 plants, researchers at Emory University (Atlanta) have indeed demonstrated, in the laboratory and in vitro, that extracts of two wild plants – the flowers of the tall goldenrod (Solidago very high) and bracken rhizomes (Pteridium aquiline) – had prevented the SARS-CoV-2 virus from entering human cells. Be careful, insist the authors, this is still only preliminary work and the mechanism of action must be elucidated. No need to rush to these two plants native to North America and well known to traditional Native American medicine: the active compounds in question are only present in minute quantities and the fern is toxic.
