Xi Jinping unanimously becomes first Chinese president for a third term

Chinese President Xi Jinping became the first Chinese president since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949 to serve three consecutive terms.

President Xi was elected by a unanimous vote of 2,952 effective votes in the National People’s Congress and the Third Plenary Session of the 14th National People’s Congress held today at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

He was also elected unanimously in the subsequent election for the chairman of the National Military Commission.

President Xi, who began his third term in power by being elected as the party general secretary and chairman of the party’s Central Military Commission at the Communist Party Congress in October last year, was elected as the state president for three consecutive five-year terms. The period was extended to 15 years.

The head of state, like the prime minister of the State Council and other high-ranking positions in the country, could only be reappointed, but through a constitutional amendment in 2018, the limit of three consecutive terms was removed.

There are seven previous presidents, including Xi, including Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Li Xiannian, Yang Yangkun, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao, among whom Xi Jinping is the first to serve three consecutive terms.

Zhao Leji was elected chairman of the National People’s Congress, the chairman of the National People’s Congress, and Han Jeong was elected vice-president.
