Jakarta –
For some people, it doesn’t taste good if you don’t add micin to your food. However, the fact is that eating too much micin-containing food can be harmful to health. Then, can eating micin food too often cause kidney disease?
As is known, micin, MSG, or monosodium glutamate is a flavor enhancer that tastes from L-glutamic acid which is naturally used by many foods. L-glutamic acid is a nonessential amino acid, meaning the body can manufacture it on its own and doesn’t need to get it from food.
MSG is in the form of a white, odorless crystalline powder which is commonly used as a food additive. In the food industry, it is called E621. MSG dissolves easily in water, separates into sodium and free glutamate. MSG is made by fermenting carbohydrate sources such as sugar, sugar cane and molasses.
Even though it can add flavor to food, in fact micin is not recommended for excessive consumption. This is because micin can increase the risk of kidney disease.
Kidney disease is a condition when the kidneys are unable to carry out their duties properly, namely filtering waste from the blood and are damaged.
There are two types of kidney disease, namely acute kidney disease and chronic kidney disease. Acute kidney disease is a condition when the kidneys are unable to filter food waste from the blood. Meanwhile, chronic kidney disease is a condition when the kidneys are damaged and are unable to filter the blood as they should
Renal and hypertension consultant internal medicine specialist, Dr. Jonny, SpPD-KGH, MKes, MM, DCN, FINASIM from Gatot Subroto Army Hospital explained that the common causes of kidney disease are diabetes (diabetes) and high blood pressure (hypertension).
“In adults, most of the causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. Other causes of kidney stones, lupus, are also unknown. Diabetes accounts for 30 percent of patients undergoing dialysis. Hypertension 25 percent. These two things has contributed to 55 percent of the number of patients undergoing dialysis,” he explained when met by detik.com at the PGI Cikini Hospital, Wednesday (8/3/2023).
Can Consuming Micin Food Too Frequently Cause Kidney Pain?
Micin has a high sodium content, as well as salt. This makes it not good to consume too much because it can cause hypertension.
“Micin is high in sodium just like salt. Because if it’s high in sodium it’s not good for the kidneys because it will cause hypertension,” explained Dr. Jonny.
Too much sodium content in the body is very dangerous because it can retain water in the body.
“Sodium will bind water in the body. If we have a lot of water, water will be retained in the body, hypertension will arise. This hypertension can interfere with the kidneys because blood flow to the kidneys will also be high.
Foods that contain MSG are also a cause for young children to get kidney disease.
“With foods that are high in salt, MSG, many young people experience chronic kidney disease,” he said.
For that, it’s good to avoid foods that contain MSG. Instead, eat good nutritious foods, such as vegetables and fruit. Drinking enough water is also important to avoid kidney disease.
“The most important thing is first to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Drink 2-3 liters which can produce 1 cc of urine per kg of body weight per hour. This means that if he weighs more than 60 kg, then one day he should have 1500 cc of urine. Second, if you smoke, you should stop. Exercise regularly. Eat a controlled diet, especially diabetes and high blood pressure,” he said
“Avoid food that is high in salt and protein because both are a burden for the kidneys. If you drink enough water to take care of your kidneys, there is no special food for healthy kidneys, but foods such as fruit and vegetables that contain high levels of antioxidants are better for the kidneys.” ” he continued.
