It’s official: Mohamed Salah is now Liverpool’s all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier League era. His two strikes against Manchester United in a 7-0 rout enabled him to surpass Robbie Fowler’s record of 128 goals for the club. Notably, it has taken the Egyptian just 205 Premier League games to do so, which works out to be 61 fewer than the 266 matches Fowler needed to register 128 goals in the English top flight.
No matter which angle you look at Salah’s Anfield career, you invariably come to the same conclusion every time; the 30-year-old is one of the most complete attackers the Premier League has ever seen and his astonishing stats prove as much.
Form is temporary, class is permanent
While it is true that Salah endured a goal drought, of sorts, during the early part of the season, which has left him priced in the latest English Premier League odds at an unfamiliar 100/1 to win the 2022/2023 Golden Boot, it is a testament to his ability to bounce back that he has now begun scoring frequently again.
In reality, that has been the only blip in Salah’s Liverpool stay since he arrived from Roma in the summer of 2017. So, what exactly has made the winger so prolific on Merseyside?
Injury free
Incredibly, Salah has only missed ten Premier league games through injury after putting pen to paper on his first Liverpool deal in 2017. Essentially, Jurgen Klopp can always rely on Salah being fit which is why the German has built his attack around the ever-dependable Egyptian.
Up until early March when Liverpool put United to the sword as briefly touched on at the top of this article, Salah hadn’t missed a game in the 2022/2023 season. It goes without saying but when a player is available to play virtually all of the time, they will stand a better chance of scoring goals.
Unprecedented professionalism
Following the game against the Red Devils, when Salah broke Fowler’s Premier League record, Sky Sports journalist Geoff Shreeves asked the 30-year-old how he intended to celebrate. The answer was by having a cup of camomile tea with loved ones before enjoying a good night’s sleep.
This response from Salah provides an insight into how much he looks after his body when he isn’t playing the beautiful game. In short, Salah dedicates his life to being the best version of himself on the pitch for Liverpool and the results are there for all to see.
Natural ability
While many professions can stay injury-free by following a devoted lifestyle off the pitch, almost none of them are able to do what Salah does on the pitch when he gets the ball at his feet.
The murmur of excitement always ripples around Anfield when Salah picks up the ball on the right wing, this typically results in terrified defenders beginning to backtrack frantically as fans hurriedly rise from their seats. In the blink of an eye, the Egyptian often goes past his man and when that happens, everyone on the world soccer stage knows what comes next, as Salah shapes to shoot on his left.
Yes, it is a sequence of events that soccer fans from around the globe know well but crucially, Salah is not a one-trick pony and often scores with his right foot and head too. This makes Salah almost impossible to contain and is part of the three reasons why there is an Egyptian king that now sits on the throne of all-time goals for Liverpool in the Premier League.
