Speaking to reporters en route to an informal meeting of European Union (EU) Ministers of Defense in Stockholm, Sweden, Stoltenberg said that it cannot be ruled out that the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut may eventually fall in the coming days.
However, he said that would not reflect a turning point in the war.
“It just highlights that we must not underestimate Russia,” he emphasized AnadoluWednesday (8/3/2023).
He then urged NATO and EU countries to continue supplying Ukraine with military aid.
Stoltenberg and EU Defense Ministers will discuss plans to increase European defense industry production.
“Current levels of consumption compared to current levels of ammunition production are unsustainable,” he said.
“In addition to the important steps already taken by NATO, we need to do more because we need to ensure that Ukraine gets what it needs to defend itself against Russia’s war aggression, and we need to replenish our own stocks,” he concluded.
