Why “the greatest debt is with women and children”. Because “there are no guarantees of fair treatment” in legal proceedings. And because “it is urgent to modify the justice system in defense of democracy.” After these slogans —which are arguments— this 8m takes place for the seventh consecutive year, the feminist strike accompanied by debate assemblies organized by Not one less. Together with other feminist organizations, the collective calls “to go out on the streets again” to maintain the visibility of the claim against the violence towards womenand to “reflect” on the real conditions of the daily life of women and diversities.
The day “what It is not a festival of flowers and little hearts, but a celebration of the struggle” —warns the sociologist Dora Barrancos—, carries this year the precise claim for “the racist, classist and patriarchal character of the current judicial system, because with this justice there are no rights or democracy”, defines Lucía Cavallero, also a sociologist and reference of Ni Una Menos. And she adds the criminalization of women’s leadership, among the reactions of the patriarchy to the advances in this fight. Among the priorities that this agenda in Argentina must address today, it points out the impact of gender gaps in judicial instances. There are currently three causes about women leaders, which are aligned with the historical claim: “Miracle Roomlas Mapuche women prisonersand the vice president Cristina Kirchner victim of the judicial attack that motivated the mobilizations in his favor and then the assassination attempt”.
“It is necessary that the feminist movement come together again and discuss the construction of power” adds Leonor Cruz, Secretary of Gender of the Autonomous CTA. “Today there is a patriarchal, capitalist and macho power, women and diversities must question that. We are fed up with the system! It is so like this that we deliver to one of us every 29 hours. One of us dies every 29 hours, for this system to be sustained, that’s why we go out on the streets again”he says.
“The fight”, defines Barranco, marks the continuity of the feminist movement, explicit in the streets since the beginning of the millennium, every 8M. And in recent years it has consolidated its political and economic profile. “Neither capitalism nor patriarchy have a human face, but debt has a feminine face, of our women and our children”describes Leonor Cruz, when she explains that the call is still online for the 2022 claims.
“The debt with the working classmates and workers, that’s why we return to the streets,” shares Cavallero. Thus, the already emblematic day of “feminist strike and assemblies” takes place today throughout the country. The epicenter in the City of Buenos Aires will be from 4:00 p.m. on 9 de Julio and Avenida de Mayo. From there they go to the Congress where the document of the different organizations gathered to commemorate a new International Day of Working Women will be read. The framework that in Argentina opened the door to achievements such as the legal, safe and free abortion law, replicated internationally, to the rhythm of the waves of the green tide.
Women’s Day is not a day of celebration
For Barrancos, 8M “is a day that always gives us a particular shudder, because It is not a love festival with women, it is not like that” emphasizes. “It is a moment of celebration of the struggles, of reflection on the long feminist struggles, and it is the opportunity for many to transform attitudes, behaviors and above all to transform their own lives, to get out of the lockdowns, to get out of the oppressive prisons, that is what we want let it always be 8M” shares the researcher.
The agenda for the day begins at 8 in the morning in front of the Courts with a press conference. And both in CABA and in almost all the cities of the country, the activities seek uphold the place of women in the power struggle. This is how it has been since the collective claim arose under the slogan: Not One Less after the murder of Chiara Páez, 14, beaten to death in 2015, in Rufino, Santa Fe province.
“We are not going to shy away from the festive fight —adds Barrancos—, but it is not a festival of flourishes, or of specially dedicated language maneuvers” graph. “We need this reflexive intertwining between actions, behaviors, and daily and urgent needs to take place, due to the disparity that exists in terms of generic sex,” he details in the interview with Page 12. “With joy and hope, we don’t come to the streets sad,” adds Cruz. “We come with the hope of knowing that a country for everyone is possible,” he adds. For that we need a judicial reform and a deep debate on the power that this patriarchal model establishes”.
Discuss, share, and transmit
The call was consolidated by the work in open assemblies “with organizations and with women without organizations that we prepared during February,” Cavallero details. This marked three axes: “The pressing situation of unionized workers or in community spaces, or who work at home running behind the inflation. This does not favor the autonomy that could make us leave the domestic and daily violence. another axis was “Support the impeachment of the Court, which resists applying the Micaela Law. It continues to have patriarchal responses.” before a food quota or “before the decision to prosecute leaders such as Cristina, Milagro or the Mapuche dams for defending their territories,” Cavallero elaborates.
If in 2022 the motto was: “Alive, free and debt free we love each other” in 2023, this 8M the call reads: “The debt is with the workers”. That is why it is also necessary that the claim be in unity, affirms Cruz. “At this moment in the country, it is urgent that the union organizations, the social and political movements return to take to the streets in unity and in the feminist movement unity has been strategic when it comes to marking our agenda and our claims that belong to the companions and companions. Take to the streets, all together, as we always do. Because we have shown that when we unite, they tremble…”, reflects the CTA leader.
Women’s power to defend democracy
Feminine power this year has a clear objective, from this call “to mark that Democracy is in danger in our country, shortly after completing 40 years of continuity, due to the actions of the Judiciary, the concentrated media and large corporations,” defines Cruz. “We are marching again against the economic adjustment, because the debt is with us,” she insists. And it is a “class” question, she underlines. “It doesn’t matter if we are salaried or not, this adjustment —which is tied to the payment to the IMFhe points out—, he has the face of a woman, and of the girls and boys of our neighborhoods”.
Cruz decides to bring the statistical data to reality: inflation levels or the number of children below the poverty line. You don’t see numbers in the neighborhoods. “In the neighborhoods you see women who earn a Potenciar salary of 35,000 —describes Cruz—, and they are stigmatized for thatwhat we are subjected to is ferocious, that is why we say that it is necessary to stop this adjustment, our job insecurity is seen in everyday life, we run every day between two or three jobs”.
But “Through the media, justice and companies, the system decides whether we eat or not, because they set the price for food. The crisis is political and then economic and social, and our democracy is in jeopardy if we don’t understand that we don’t understand anything: in December they attempted an assassination, before the economic coup, prices rise, they put democracy in check and that’s what we came out of to defend” affirms Cruz. “Changing justice and the model has to do with the feminist perspective and with putting life, dignity, first and foremost, at the center,” she adds.
“What should be prioritized is the State’s debt to women and diversities. Denounce and put on the street that there is a distributive agenda that must be prioritized before the interests of financial speculation, ”says her, Lucía Cavallero. “We achieved important and substantive achievements or at least ways of relating to each other and ways of distributing power were called into question, and it is time to stop ourselves in the face of the reaction, because today the prosecution of the cases of our women leaders has to do with thatand that is why it is important to be on the streets together and in a unified way, to establish a position with the different organizations”.
