The United Nations Organization makes history by reaching, for the first time, an agreement on how to protect the world’s oceans.
The treaty, something that has been a topic of discussion for nearly 20 years, aims to protect marine life in regions outside national borders, also known as the high seas.
A board will be created to identify and protect these areas of the ocean with a high biodiversity of marine life.
Ground rules will also be established for nations that want to use them.
Currently, only one percent of international waters are protected.
In addition, with this agreement, the percentage will increase to 30 percent by 2030.
