Teheran –
The supreme leader Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei mention case mass poisoning which struck hundreds of schoolgirls in the country as an ‘unforgivable crime’. Khamenei stressed that if the case of mass poisoning is proven to be intentional, then the perpetrators are worthy sentenced to death.
As reported Associated Press and Reuters, Tuesday (7/3/2023), this comment was the first moment for Khamenei to openly discuss the mass poisoning case. Khamenei’s comments come at a time of mounting public anger over a wave of alleged attacks on schoolgirls in Iran.
The mass poisoning, whose cause is still a mystery, first occurred in the holy city of Qom in November last year, before spreading to 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces. The case forced parents to take their children out of school and demonstrate.
According to reports by state media and Tehran officials, more than 1,000 schoolgirls in various parts of Iran have fallen ill due to poisoning since November last year.
Iranian officials only acknowledged the mass poisoning case in recent weeks and did not go into detail about the alleged perpetrators or what chemicals — if any — were used.
“The competent authorities should seriously address this case of poisoning of the students,” Khamenei said in a statement quoted by state news agencies IRNA.
“If it is proven intentional, the perpetrators of this unpardonable crime should be put to death,” he said.
“There will be no pardon for them,” Khamenei said in his statement.
