“Vitamin D has an important effect on the nervous system and bone development. It is found in oily fish, red meat, mushrooms and sunlight, among other things. If you walk outside in the sun, the light causes vitamin D in your body. It is not the intention is that you lie down in the sun to get vitamin D. You also get that when you walk outside and expose your skin to sunlight.”

But what makes vitamin D possibly good for the prevention of dementia? “We know that it has an effect on the brain,” says Van Hattum. “We know that it probably breaks down proteins related to dementia. What this study shows is that if you take it in advance – before you show signs of dementia – it does have an effect.”
