Warns the British

The British Meteorological Institute warns that a polar low pressure can lead to low temperatures and large amounts of snow over large parts of the country.

They say that Scotland could experience the coldest day of the year tomorrow, the temperature in the highlands is expected to drop to around 10 degrees below zero on the night of Monday. Northerly winds will make the effective temperature even colder.

– Potentially we could see some of the coldest temperatures so far this year. The lowest we have seen was in January at -10.4, so we may see something lower than that, meteorologist Honor Criswick tells Sky News who first mentioned the matter.

– Expect quite cold conditions

The wintry weather could bring up to 10cm of snow on higher ground in Scotland and 5cm in lower elevations. A yellow warning for snow has been issued in north-east Scotland from 18:00 on Sunday.

From midnight on Sunday, the yellow snow and ice warnings spread to north-west England and north-east Scotland and move further down the east coast as far as Hull on Tuesday.

– We expect quite cold conditions and snow showers over the next few days over Scotland and northern parts of England, says Criswick.

He says that it is not time to pack away the winter clothes for the British yet.

– It will feel quite cold and the wind will pick up a bit so it will feel quite chilly.

Foretells severe cold weather

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert and has placed North East England, North West England and Yorkshire under a level three alert, with the rest of England at level two.

A level three warning means there is a 90 per cent chance of severe cold weather, icy conditions or heavy snow, which could increase health risks for vulnerable patients, according to the NHS.
