On February 6, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.4 struck Turkey and Syria, killing at least 21,719 people and injuring thousands. National associations such as Secours Populaire and Unicef are mobilizing locally to provide aid to victims affected by this disaster.
Adem Altan: the photographer who captured one of the most striking images of the drama
One of the most vivid images of the earthquake’s violence was captured by AFP photographer Adem Altan.
He took a photo of Mesut Hancer holding the hand of his dead daughter Irmak in the rubble of their home in Kahramanmaras. The photographer said Mesut Hancer asked him to take pictures of his daughter and showed him where she was lying.
This tragic scene had a deep impact on Adem Altan who described it as “unbearable pain” and couldn’t hold back his tears.
The efforts of associations to provide assistance to victims
A first aid convoy entered the Syrian rebel areas through the Bab Al-Hawa border post. This convoy contains blankets, mattresses, tents, relief materials and solar lamps and should cover the needs of at least 5,000 people. Despite this valuable aid, Syrian rescuers have expressed disappointment at its specific use to search for survivors in the rubble.
Syrian president visits Aleppo for first time since earthquake
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad visited Aleppo for the first time after the earthquake struck there.
Turkey announces its intention to open other border crossings so that the delivery of aid can reach all those affected by this tragic disaster. National associations continue to work tirelessly to help families affected by this immense loss.
