In order to get them kits of food to people over 60 years of age and with the greatest food need in the city, several volunteers met this Saturday under the call of
Food Bank NYC organization.
“This work is very necessary, it is an honor to help people who need the most, and especially older people,” Michelle Moreno, a volunteer at this charity event, tells us.
“It means a great thing, trying to help the community,” says another volunteer, Carlos Forero. And he adds: “I see the happiness of an old man who currently needs him, many people are in need today, with everything that has happened in the last two years and here we are doing the best we can.”
They congregated to prepare the food that they themselves are in charge of distributing, or taking to other organizations.
From this food distribution center in the Bronx, volunteers meet 2-4 times a week.
Carmen Boon, Vice President of External Affairs, Food Bank for New York City says:
“Today’s activity is part of Justice Served or Justicia Served in Spanish, it is a campaign that we have been doing for many years.”
“40 volunteers from law firms across the city have gathered at our warehouse in The Bronx at the Hunts Point Market. to pack food, more than 19,000 pounds of food, especially for seniors throughout the city.”
Los kits that older adults will receive contain non-perishable foods such as rice, grains, oil, hot and cold cereals, juices, pasta, canned protein such as tuna and salmon, as well as fruits.
Lary Stromfeld, Founder of the Food Bank for NYC Justice Served campaign, details his goal:
“My intent is to raise awareness and resources through attorneys in my community to support food pantries. For 8 years, we have led Served Justice, a 6-week campaign, which includes this volunteering and together we raise awareness about food insecurity in New York”.
Food Bank for NYC’s main goal is to help the city’s nearly 1.6 million food insecure residents, according to its statistics.
The non-profit group has been dedicated for 40 years to distributing food pantries throughout the city.
