NEW YORK (Dagbladet): The marriage between the two Republican profiles in Washington DC has created many headlines in recent years.
George Conway (59) eventually became one of the loudest critics of then-President Donald Trump and his administration. Kellyanne Conway (56) was at the same time a highly trusted and high-profile adviser in Trump’s administration. Therefore, the American media has been full of speculation about how this marriage could work.
On Saturday evening, both confirm in a joint message on both of theirs Twitter accounts that they are divorcing after 22 years of marriage.
– Many happy years
– We are in the final stages of an amicable separation, writes the ex-couple and continues:
– The marriage may not survive
– We married more than two decades ago, we will always have the many happy years (and four corgis) we shared, and above all else, our four incredible children, who remain the heartbeat of our family and our top priority.
In the statement, the married couple also ask that their privacy is now respected.
– The Trump administration is like a “shit show” in a burning dumpster
– We appreciate the many family members, friends and colleagues who know us, care about us and support us. We remain united as parents to provide love, joy, comfort and protection to our beautiful children, the couple wrote.
Kellyanne Conway became part of Donald Trump’s election campaign in July 2016 before he was elected president of the United States in November of the same year. She quickly became election campaign manager. When Trump came to the White House, she became one of the most high-profile advisers to the president through a long series of interviews.
Alternative facts
Among other things, she made big headlines when she defended Trump’s press spokesperson in an interview. The spokesperson had falsely claimed that there was a record number of people present at the inauguration ceremony of Trump. Conway defended it as “alternative facts”, which has since become a famous term.
Breaking with Trump
George Conway, for his part, is a high-profile lawyer. Originally he also supported the Trump election campaign, and he too should have been considered for a high position in the administration, writes Washington Post.
However, he quickly had enough of Trump’s presidency. In March 2018, he sent out a tirade of criticism against Trump on Twitter. Eventually, his account gained over 2.1 million followers. He also wrote many articles and participated in several projects with harsh criticism of Trump and the administration. In October 2019, he wrote, among other things, a column in the magazine Atlantic. There he writes that Trump was completely unfit to be president, and he questioned the president’s mental health.
Resigned
Conway also co-founded The Lincoln Project, which was a political organization for moderate Republicans with the goal of stopping the re-election of Trump in 2020.
In the summer of 2020, Kellyanne Conway resigned as a senior adviser to Trump on the grounds that she had to take care of the children. At the same time, George Conway withdrew from the Lincoln project.
Kellyanne Conway released her autobiography “Here’s the Deal” last May. There she writes about the problems with marriage.
– I had two men in my life. One was my husband. One was my boss, who was also the President of the United States. One of those men defended me. And it wasn’t George Conway. It was Donald Trump, she writes in the book and adds:
– Democracy will survive. America will survive. George and I may not survive.
Both withdraw
Trump statement
After the divorce first became known, Trump also quickly signed up on his own Twitter copy Truth Social.
– Congratulations to Kellyanne Conway on her DIVORCE from her crazy husband, Mr. Kellyanne Conway. Free at last. She has finally gotten rid of the disgusting lead solder around her neck. She is a great person, and will now be free to live the life she deserves.. And it will be a great life without the extremely unattractive loser by her side! writes the former US president in his statement.
– Looking forward to seeing you in New York at E. Jean’s trial next month! Hugs kisses, George Conway quickly replied to Trump.
The lawsuit he refers to is a lawsuit filed by author E. Jean Carroll who has accused Trump of rape.
