Black on the Neck, Ordinary Legs or Signs of Diabetes? Here’s the Difference

Jakarta

Diabetes in children is a real threat, the cases are said to be increasing lately. One sign to watch out for is the black area on the neck. What’s the difference with being black because of the climbs?

A pediatrician from Ukrida Hospital, Dr. Leonirma Tengguna, M.Sc, SpA explained, signs of diabetes in the form of thickening of the skin are usually found in children who are obese or overweight. Usually found in the neck or nape area.

“The items are different from dirty items, they are blacker and the skin looks thicker,” he explained in a conversation on detikcom’s e-Life program, Friday (3/3/2023).

“If we often look at it, we will definitely know that this is different, not just black because it is dirty or for whatever reason, but the characteristic sign of insulin resistance,” he continued.

However, he cautioned that these signs are generally found only in type 2 diabetes which is mostly associated with diet and lifestyle. Meanwhile, in children, another type of diabetes that is often found is type one.

“This type one is actually the most common in children. So the main symptoms are the 3 P’s and the weight loss for no apparent reason,” he concluded.

The 3 P symptoms referred to by Dr. Leonirma include:

  • Polydipsia, or frequent drinking
  • Polyphagia, or frequent eating
  • Polyuria, or frequent urination
