News culture Netflix offers a new exclusive with this Vietnamese action film: perhaps one of the best Asian films of 2023?
This month, the Netflix catalog will welcome a lot of new releases, including a Vietnamese film with wild action that is likely to delight thrill seekers.
Netflix and Asian cinema
Whether you discovered Asian cinema with Parasite or whether you’re a longtime fan, Netflix has you covered. In recent years, the streaming platform has offered many Asian and especially Korean productions. She thus distributed Okjathe film by Bong Joon-ho, director who notably offered us the famous Parasite. We then saw the arrival of many exclusive series such as Squid Game, My Name or Alice in Borderland. You can add to that many Japanese anime, for the most part, and you get a large catalog stamped made in Asia.
This is of course not trivial. In 2020, Netflix expressed its desire to increase its market share in the “Asia-Pacific” region. And to do this, the platform has of course invested in new licenses and productions. The following year, we also learned that Netflix was working on at least 50 new original Asian productions. And what follows may have been part of that.
Before Furies, Furies
Do you know Anger ? This Vietnamese film by Le-Van Kiet is a kind of Taken. The idea is indeed to follow Hai Phuong, mother of a little girl who was kidnapped by traffickers. To find them, she will draw on her old gangster reflexes, not without taking revenge along the way. On the program: a good dose of action and an exotic dive into the heart of Saigon. The movie is currently available on Netflix if you’re curious. But what is the connection with Furies ? Well, the latter is a prequel to the 2019 film.
The film tells the story of Bi, Thanh and Hong, three fierce vigilantes who have come together to end the reign of a criminal organization led by the vile Hai. As the trio infiltrates this organization to enforce their justice, we gradually wonder if they have not been manipulated to achieve revenge.
Samuel Kefi Abrikh, who had choreographed the fights of Angerreturns to Furies. On the other hand, on the production side there is a change since it is the Vietnamese actress and director Veronica Ngo (The Lost Dragon, Tam Cam: The Untold Story) who took the reins of this prequel. As for the casting, we will find Veronica Ngo in her role of Hai Phuong. She will be accompanied in particular by Rima Thanh Vy, Thuan Nguyen and Song Luan. To find out all about it, see you on March 23 on Netflix. Note that the film will have the right to a preview in the US on March 12. In the meantime, you can find the trailer for the film at the top of this article.
