Extreme weather in the USA – Nine tornadoes in a short time

Gigantic winter storms and extreme weather have caused a lot of chaos in the United States in recent weeks. The Midwest and southern states have been hit hard by winds and tornadoes, while states on both the west and east coasts are experiencing huge amounts of snow.

At least 10 people are said to have died across the country as a result of the extreme weather, according to the news agency Reuters.

Hard hit by tornadoes

In the American Midwest, tornadoes have caused great destruction in several states. In Kentucky, at least four people are said to have been killed by the storm, including a woman who died after a tree fell on her car.

Up to nine tornadoes have passed through the states of Kansas and Oklahoma. At least 12 people have been injured and several homes destroyed after a tornado hit Oklahoma’s third-largest city, Norman, according to ABCNews.

Parts of Texas have been hit by thunderstorms that brought with them very strong winds. In Dallas, several people were injured after four semi-trailers were blown off the road.

The National Weather Service reports that the powerful storm had mostly left the southern states by Saturday night and is moving northeast, where it is forecast to bring heavy snow and sleet to Michigan and New York state.

Three meters of snow

In the usually sunny California, the storm has paralyzed several of the mountain communities in Southern California due to large amounts of snow. A state of emergency has been declared in several counties in the state.

The San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles have been covered in over three meters of snow. Thousands of residents have been locked in their homes for over a week and there are reports of a lack of medicine and baby food, it says AP News.

The local authorities in San Bernardino tell AP that some of the residents may be trapped for up to another week. Fire and rescue crews assist in the relief work, together with the National Guard.

In San Diego, a blizzard warning was issued for the first time ever and the snow settled around the famous Hollywood sign.
