Many things can make your heart beat faster, such as stress, trauma or an accident, but more serious things can cause an arrhythmia the heartThese include dehydration, or a history of heart disease or a heart defect. Medications, extreme exercise, or anxiety can also cause heart rhythm changes or irregular heartbeats.
– What is an arrhythmia?
Arrhythmias can feel like fluttering or butterflies in your chest or your heart racing or pounding, and for the most part, they’re harmless.
What are the types of arrhythmias?
The Mayo Clinic explains that arrhythmias are of two types, tachycardia (faster heartbeat) and bradycardia (slower heartbeat).
What are the treatments for arrhythmia?
An arrhythmia is often harmless and does not require treatment, according to the American Heart Association. Before this can be determined, the doctor must be aware of the problem and determine the underlying cause. If it is determined that treatment should occur, they may suggest several different options:
Increase physical activity, reduce caffeine intake, and manage stress.
Medicines for irregular heartbeats or changes in medicines that may be causing symptoms.
Surgery may be recommended to remove blockages or correct defects. Surgery may also be required to implant devices such as a pacemaker, which keeps the heart beating at an appropriate pace
What are the ways to prevent arrhythmias?
A heart-healthy diet includes fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, lean protein, fiber and plenty of water
Do regular exercise, especially cardiovascular exercise
Losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight
Quit smoking, alcohol and other medications
Limit or avoid caffeine
Practice managing stress and reducing anxiety
Use medications as directed by your doctor.
