Jakarta (ANTARA) – A specialist in internal medicine, a medical hematology-oncology consultant from the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) Dr. Faizal Drissa Hasibun, Sp.PD-KHOM advises people not to become obese in order to prevent cancer in the future .
“Avoid unhealthy eating patterns, don’t let metabolic syndrome like obesity appear, that’s a bad start for cancer risk,” he said in a health discussion that was held online, Friday (3/3).
According to the Ministry of Health, obesity is characterized by a body mass index (BMI) above 27 which is obtained by dividing the weight in kilograms divided by the height in meters and squared.
In addition to measuring BMI, there is also a calculation using abdominal circumference to show central obesity. Men are said to be centrally obese if their abdominal circumference is more than 90 cm, while women are above 80 cm.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) link obesity with a higher risk of developing 13 types of cancer, including those in the thyroid, breast, liver, kidney and colon. According to the CDC, obesity can cause changes in the body that help lead to cancer. These changes can include lasting inflammation and higher-than-normal insulin levels.
Therefore, in order to prevent the body from becoming obese, a healthy lifestyle including paying attention to healthy food intake and an active lifestyle is important.
