“We have not been able to eliminate inefficiencies and distortions”

The government representative of the Greek Government, Giannis Oikonomou, referred to the deadly tragedy of Tempe with the train collision during the briefing of the parliamentary editors, announcing the creation of an “independent supra-party committee of experts”.

According to him, this committee “will fully examine the causes of the accident and the chronic delays in the implementation of the railway projects. Delays that have their causes in chronic pathologies of the Greek State, in decades of distortions”.

“It is true that we faced many of these inadequacies and distortions in a wide range of responsibilities and areas of State action during this period, and in the railways. It is also true, however, that we could not eliminate them. For this, after all, we take our share of the responsibility,” said the government representative.

“We have a duty, as a State, to take care of the injured, to take care of the people who experienced the tragic events, to stand by the relatives of the victims as long as necessary. We have a duty to give official responsibilities. Above all, we have a duty to do everything in order not to experience such scenes again,” he said, among other things.
