Britain’s Arm will be listed in New York instead of London, but will remain headquartered in the UK

MADRID, 3 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The British manufacturer of microprocessors Arm, owned by the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, has determined that it will seek an “exclusive” listing in the United States, although it will maintain its headquarters in the United Kingdom, as indicated by the multinational.

“After contacts with the UK government and the FCA over several months, SoftBank and Arm have determined that seeking an exclusive listing for Arm in the US in 2023 is the best way forward for the company and its stakeholders,” he said. pointed out the CEO of the British manufacturer, René Haas.

Despite this decision, which represents a severe blow to the London Stock Exchange in its role as an international financial hub, Arm’s CEO has indicated that the company will consider a subsequent listing in the United Kingdom “in due course”. .

Likewise, Haas has highlighted the announcement by Arm of new plans to increase its presence in the United Kingdom, including the opening of a new center in Bristol and the continued growth of the workforce of the company in the country.

“Arm also intends to maintain its UK headquarters, operations and material intellectual property,” it said, adding that the chipmaker “is proud of its British heritage.”

“We will continue to invest and play an important role in the British technology ecosystem,” he added.

FRUSTRATED MERGER WITH NVIDIA.

A year ago, SoftBank announced its intention to take the British manufacturer of microprocessors public, after the failure of the sale of Arm to the American Nvidia for 40,000 million dollars (37,660 million euros) due to pressure from regulators.

In December 2021, the United States Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit to block the acquisition of Arm by Nvidia, considering that the proposed agreement would give excessive market power to one of the largest chip companies in the sector.

Previously, the UK authorities had already expressed concern about the potential merger of these companies, which led the British Government to formally request in November 2021 to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA, for its acronym in English) to open an in-depth investigation into the national security implications of Nvidia’s purchase of Arm.

In turn, in October 2021, the European Commission announced the opening of an in-depth investigation into the purchase to clarify whether the operation harmed competition in the European economic area by restricting the access of other competitors to Arm technology.
