The head of the electric car manufacturer Tesla, Elon Musk, has officially confirmed at the “Investors’ Day” event that the car manufacturer’s new factory, or Gigafactory, will be built in Mexico. The plant will be located near the city of Monterey in the northeast of the country, near the border with the United States, but it is planned to produce the next generation of Tesla electric models.
This new factory in Mexico will become the largest electric car factory in the world, while the total investment of the project will be around 5 billion dollars. It will be equipped with all the latest Tesla technical solutions to make car production as efficient as possible, which will allow Tesla to produce a cheaper, affordable electric car for the masses. Until now, there have been rumors about a cheap Tesla model from time to time, but so far they have only been rumors without tangible coverage, and Musk has also admitted that the manufacturer has other priorities for the time being.
Tesla has yet to provide more information on planned production volumes at this plant or any other relevant information, but it is understood that the manufacturer has big plans. Musk has also emphasized that Tesla will continue to increase the production capacity in all the factories that are already working.
It is not yet known how long it will take to build the new factory in Mexico, but Tesla has certainly learned from the mistakes and problems in Berlin, where Tesla faced a series of bureaucratic obstacles and problems.
The location near Monterey is no accident – the city is about a 7-hour drive from Tesla’s headquarters and also the Gigafactory Texas factory. It was previously known that a special lane for Tesla has been created at the US-Mexico border crossing located on the Monterey Highway. This was explained by the fact that there are several Tesla suppliers in the state of New Leon, so such a lane reduced the time to be spent at the border, but already several months ago it reinforced rumors that Tesla’s interests are actually more serious and the company wants to invest in the construction of a factory, which is now confirmed.
