With “The Banshees Of Inisherin” Martin McDonaugh not only received a lot of critical acclaim, but also brought in nine (!) Oscar nominations. As has now been announced, the bilious tragic comedy will be coming to Disney+ shortly.
Disney+ subscribers can count themselves lucky. Especially if they either don’t have time to go to the cinema or simply prefer to watch films on the couch at home. Because time and again, cinema films are made available here in the stream only a few months after their release. This doesn’t just mean Marvel adventures like “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” or “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. The star-studded satire “The Menu” also ended up in the Disney+ subscription pretty quickly.
Now the next streaming release of a film that is currently even being shown in some cinemas is imminent: “The Banshees Of Inisherin”. The new film by “Three Billboards” maker Martin McDonagh has attracted attention in recent months thanks to almost consistently positive reviews and has become something of an art house favourite. Add to that the fact that “The Banshees Of Inisherin” was nominated for a total of nine Oscars – including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Screenplay.
The Banshees Of Inisherin will be available on Disney+ on March 15, 2022, two days after this year’s Oscars, which take place on the night of March 12-13.
That’s what “The Banshees Of Inisherin” is about
Padric Suilleabhain (Colin Farrell) is a kindhearted, dear soul who doesn’t have a lot on his mind. In 1923 he lives on Inisherin, a small island off the west coast of Ireland in Galway Bay. Every day at 2pm he sets off to pick up his best friend Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) at his house to spend the rest of the day at the local pub drinking beers and chatting about trifles. But this time Colm doesn’t open the door.
A short time later, Colm reveals to his former best friend that, for no specific reason, he simply doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore. And he even goes one hard step further: If Padraic approaches him anyway and pressures him in any way, he will cut off his own finger every time in the future, even if he is no longer able to play his beloved violin because of it …
Is the praise justified?
We too have to say that Martin McDonagh has made a damn good film with “The Banshees Of Inisherin”. The official FILMSTARTS review gave the film 4 out of 5 stars. In conclusion it says: “A bitterly angry allegory of the Irish civil war, carried out by a grandiose cast – and at the same time a stoic black humorous comedy that really only the Irish can pull off.

We also discussed “The Banshees Of Inisherin” on the FILMSTARTS podcast on the big screen in January as part of its theatrical release in January. As a moderator, the author of these lines got active support from social media boss Melanie and Moviepilot editor Jan Felix, not only to find out that they are simply not able to pronounce Irish names correctly, but also that ” The Banshees Of Inisherin” has become a very special film that will resonate for a long time.
