One of the seven bronze faces on the memorial to Nelson Mandela in the park of the same name in Southeast has been out of place since last night. The police have now launched an investigation, but there is currently no trace of a possible thief. The municipality has already taken several security measures.
The memorial stone chosen by residents, designed by South African artist Mohau Modisakeng, was unveiled in the summer of 2021. The seven faces are of people who live nearby.
“I was shocked to hear that our residents have been robbed of one of our finest works of art,” says district chairman Tanja Jadnanansing. “The memorial stands for freedom and fits perfectly within our district. It often functions as a meeting place and is also mentioned very regularly.”

A spokesman for the district says that ‘everything is being done’ to find the part. The municipality of Amsterdam has reported the theft. In addition, fences, a camera and extra attachments have been placed on and around the memorial.
The police have now launched an investigation, but there is no sight yet on a possible thief. The detective is looking for tips from people who saw something last night.
