GENEVA – Effort United States of America (US) to add fuel to the conflict Ukraine potentially triggering an outright nuclear standoff. The warning was issued by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Russia Sergey Ryabkov.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Geneva Conference on Disarmament, Ryabkov said the most acute strategic threat came from US and NATO policies, which seek to fuel further conflict in Ukraine and the tensions around it that they intentionally started.

Against this backdrop, the senior diplomat warned that the increased involvement of the US and NATO in hostilities is fraught with the threat of a direct military clash between the nuclear powers with disastrous consequences.

Ryabkov said Moscow had informed Western countries of the risk, but its warnings had been distorted for propaganda purposes and deliberately misinterpreted.

He went on to add that such a policy contradicts the nuclear nations’ declaration that nuclear conflicts must not be fought.

In January 2022, in a rare display of unity, the five nuclear powers – Russia, China, US, UK and France – issued a joint statement saying they considered the avoidance of war between the Nuclear Armed States and the reduction of strategic risk to be their primary responsibility.

“The destructive actions by the US and its allies inflamed tensions in several regions around the world, which shows that we can talk about a growing global struggle for a new world order,” Ryabkov said.
