Italian cyclist Antonio Tiberi, who was punished for killing the cat of the Minister of Tourism of San Marino, is in serious trouble.
Last summer, Tiberi bought an air pistol and wanted to try it at home. The first shot was aimed at a road sign, the next at the neighbor’s cat, Federico Pedini Amati, Minister of Tourism of San Marino. Unfortunately, such silly fun ended fatally for the mouse junker, and for the cyclist with a lawsuit, because there were eyewitnesses to what happened. Tiberi, who was born in Italy but lives in San Marino, was fined €4,000.
“The cat didn’t bother anyone. He lived with us for a long time and was a favorite of my three-year-old daughter. In my opinion, it is not right that someone just kills a pet like that and is greeted with a fine of 4,000 euros,” Amati believes that the punishment is too soft.
He also stated that such people should not become residents of San Marino. Tiberi has also been fined by his professional cycling team “Trek-Segafredo”, which is also represented by Latvians Toms Skujiņš and Emīls Liepiņš.
Tiberi received a 20-day suspension without pay, which the team will transfer to an animal welfare organization. The cyclist himself, who became the world junior champion in 2019, has regretted his action, calling it stupid and irresponsible.
He also pledged to donate part of the prizes earned in the competition to animal shelters. The 21-year-old Tiberi has had a strong start to the season, having finished eighth in the multi-day Tour of Australia and seventh in the Tour of the United Arab Emirates last week.
