New for motorists in New York: cameras can now measure the noise generated by cars! Fines have been introduced.
The fight against pollution is intensifying in New York, but on one of its most unknown aspects: sound pollution. The city is at the forefront of the fight against noise, as the traffic is intense. Unlike cities like Shanghai, where the omnipresence of electric cars reduces the noise generated by road traffic, petrol cars are still highly developed there.
Result : the noise pollution is very strong in the american city. Between the noise of cars, the sirens of the police, ambulances and firefighters as well as the countless works, difficult for the inhabitants to find a quiet and calm place. To combat this phenomenon, the city has introduced new types of cameras by equipping them witha sound level meter !
New York City installs cameras equipped with sound level meters!
Most motorists associate the road traffic surveillance cameras speed limits and traffic offences. However, New York, as London and Paris have begun to do, has introduced new traffic tickets. Now, drivers of motorcycles, trucks and cars can be fined if their vehicle generates too much noise.
The objective is very clear: to fight against noise pollution. Obviously, difficult to measure the noise of the cars with the only ear of the policemen of the city. To apply this new device, New York then equipped some of its traffic surveillance cameras with sound level meters. They make it possible to immediately detect whether certain vehicles produce more noise than the newly imposed limit.

These new cameras can very accurately measure the decibels emitted by each car or motorcycle and compare them to legal limits. Thanks to the video, the license plate is photographed. This then allows the authorities to find the owner if these limits are not respected. The amount of the fine is rather dissuasive. The first offense results in a penalty of 800 euros. In the event of a repeat offence, the amount may be increased to more than 2,500 euros.
The only problem with this regulation: New Yorkers are not necessarily aware of these new sanctions. Many of them could then end up with a huge fine without necessarily knowing that they were not respecting New York Highway Code !
