In order not to further deteriorate the quality of nature in North Brabant, the province will temporarily stop granting permits that lead to extra nitrogen emissions in Natura 2000 areas. That reports Broadcasting Brabant.
The reason for the decision is the outcome of a so-called nature target analysis. That is the research that every province must do into the quality of nature. This study shows that the quality of nature has deteriorated and so the province intervenes.
Projects in the field of infrastructure, agriculture, industry, housing, but also sustainability projects are temporarily not granted a permit. Several tender projects have already been halted. The province is still mapping out the exact consequences of the decision.
It is not yet clear how long the permit stop will last. Deputy Hagar Roijackers (GroenLinks) emphasizes that all sectors are affected and calls the results of the study “the new reality”. The province of Brabant is therefore not waiting for the official review of the nature target analysis by the Ecological Authority.
‘This is how the whole country will be locked’
The Southern Agriculture and Horticulture Organization (ZLTO) is late the regional broadcaster expressed dismay at the county’s decision. “This is how the whole of Brabant will be locked,” says Hendrik Hoeksema of ZLTO.
He fears that Brabant is the beginning. “The other provinces will soon also come up with their nature target analysis. Most likely, the areas there have also deteriorated. What will they do then? They cannot stay behind. So the entire country will be locked.”
