Kerbal Space Program 2 early access test round It’s as if the second part was made by the Kerbals themselves. Yes, those little yelling green creatures that mess up everything, but they don’t understand anything in return. THE Kerbal Space Program original first part standard. While I avoided the game at first because of the annoying little green creatures, I finally got the hang of it and learned a lot from it. Not only about physics, but also about history. Even if we consider the Moon landing as history. Brilliant game. So far, many children have the usual “what will you be when you grow up?” to the question, he answered clichédly that he was an astronaut. But since the appearance of KSP, they already want to be rocket engineers… The European Space Agency also stated that most of their new applicants were infected by KSP. And all this was put together by a small Mexican development team – not even one that deals with games.
A Kerbal actually a sandbox game with basic orbital physics (this is a simplified space physics: we are always in the attraction of a single celestial body). With this, the player can understand that there is no such thing as aiming at the Moon from the Earth and uzsgyi. We’re always in the pull of something—preferably in the orbit of something—and need to gain (or slow down) speed by burning fuel to get into the pull of another body. This is how we can get to other planets and moons. And if we want, we can also use the help of gravity, the slingshot effect.
Of course, this is fun for a while, but then it gets boring, so the developers also put together a campaign for the game. Although we can freely determine what we do, the game also gives us tasks. And that’s how it made sense to deal with problems that are, at first glance, very difficult. For example, the very first step is to orbit Kerbin (planet Earth within the game). This is later considered the most basic task that we do routinely, but I remember that even this was difficult as a beginner KSP player, and if there is no campaign, I give up. But I struggled like this until I succeeded. And then the Solar System opened up before me. It is not by chance that it is so successful Kerbal Space Program first part.
Then in 2019, the news came that the second part was being prepared, and the project was not worked on by the amateur creators of the first part, but by professional game developers who have the utmost respect for the predecessor and played a lot with it. Everyone was very happy. We thought that if we kept the original atmosphere, only got nicer graphics and much more to explore – new solar systems and more technology were promised in the trailer – then there could be nothing wrong. But then Covid struck. Everyone stayed at home. And the appearance slipped… This was a bit strange, since I also worked in a home office as a programmer – I didn’t really understand the slippage. But there have been amazing videos of futuristic engines and mystical new planets. I would have played a lot.
Then, after many delays, the game finally appeared and… Early access??? What?!? Then what was the slip? Where are the super new engines and the other solar system? What, not even science? What happened to management? So many questions and a heavy dose of bitter taste. The graphics are great and there is no drop in fps on my brand new PC. Although why would it be, since the appearance is not that much nicer than the turbocharged view of the first part with the latest patches. But if the game runs smoothly, why is the control so unbelievably difficult? After holding down the right mouse button, I still have to paddle quite a bit on the table to turn the camera a little and maybe look at my spaceship from a different angle. In the meantime, right-clicking will cause a bunch of small popups to pop up. Has no one tested this? But what did all that time really go for?
It is also understandable that when the Kerbal Space Program his original game came out, we got it in much worse shape then, and it was in early access for many years. There was no science there either. In fact, radio waves were introduced only later – like everything else. And I would accept that. But that’s not what they promised. It was about the fact that the release is being delayed just to avoid early access. And if it’s already in such an early state – it’s nowhere near what movies were posted about during the quarantine – then don’t charge the price of a full AAA game for it. They didn’t even charge 50 euros for the big predecessor in similar condition! This is really just a very expensive tech demo.
It’s cool to say that when building airplanes, you can change the shape of the wings with different sliders. It really wasn’t like that in the first part, and it’s really great. But we lost so much in return. And I’m also quite sure that the developers will lie to him and fix the bugs. They do the management properly. The promised things will also be prepared slowly. And in another three years, it will be a brilliantly good game. But again and again the question is the same, what have they done so far, and if they had your great predecessor as an example, why didn’t they do at least that – only with better graphics? Why did they step back a lot? If I had given money to the Kerbal Space Program 2for – and I won’t receive a press copy – then I would definitely return it now, and I will buy it when it has a normal campaign and a manageable interface. And it will be playable at least on the same level as the worthy first part.
The most fanatical fans have already bought this game, but for those readers who haven’t already, I can suggest you to wait. That’s the way it is now, it’s definitely not worth it for that much. And I promise that in a few years I will write a brand new review Kerbal Space Program from the second part, when most of the mistakes have been corrected and you will know at least as much as the first part. And the controls won’t be so horrible. Until then, however, the old version is presented, which according to them is still a sensible choice, as long as the developers continue to work on the new game. ■
