New phone from Nokia.. You can fix it yourself

A smart phone that any user can repair by himself, a step that Nokia starts by offering additional spare parts, with every phone that the consumer buys.

The product will include a recyclable plastic backing that can be easily removed to replace broken components, as well as a battery, screen and extra charging port.

The phone also comes with repair tools that the consumer can use to repair his phone.

According to marketing reports, this idea is popular with consumers, as it will make phones more sustainable and long-lasting, not to mention lower maintenance costs.

A consumer repairing his phone personally costs an average of thirty percent, less than replacing an old phone with a new one.

It is a move backed by lawmakers in the European Parliament, who have long called for legislation to force manufacturers to give users a “right to repair”.

Nokia’s Finnish initiative was not the first in the world of smartphones.

It was preceded by Apple, which had long been reluctant to change its own phone repair policies.

In November 2021, it announced the launch of a self-service repair program that allows customers to purchase spare parts to repair their own devices, but it hesitated for fear of a decline in the parent company’s financial returns.

In this context, technology journalist Ayman Salah told Sky News Arabia:

  • The consumer’s ability to perform maintenance is certainly imperfect.
  • Historically, Nokia has had a known strength which is the endurance of its phones.
  • Nokia relies on the European market to supply its sales.
  • Phone maintenance is a complex matter that cannot be performed by ordinary users.
