US Comments on Electoral Rules in His Country, Mexican President Furious!

Mexico City

President Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador annoyed by the call United States of America (US) question of independent electoral institutions following massive demonstrations against the country’s controversial new law. Lopez Obrador accused the US of interfering in Mexico’s internal affairs.

As reported AFP, Wednesday (1/3/2023), Lopez Obrador made the accusations a day after US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Washington “supports independent and well-resourced electoral institutions capable of strengthening democratic processes and the rule of law.” Lopez Obrador in his statement rejected the US call.

“As a bad habit, (the United States) always meddles in matters that are not their business,” Lopez Obrador told reporters.

“Today there is much more democracy in Mexico than in the United States,” he added.

Price’s remarks came after tens of thousands of Mexicans on Sunday protested against changes to the rule of law championed by Lopez Obrador, which critics see as an attack on democracy ahead of the 2024 election.

The new law reduces the size and budget of the National Electoral Institute (INE), the independent body that oversees elections in Peru. The changes to the law were approved by Peru’s Congress, which is controlled by the ruling political party, last week.

“In Mexico, we see major debates about electoral reform. We believe that an electoral system that is well resourced and independent, and respects judicial independence supports a healthy democracy,” Price said in a statement.
