Ouagadougou –
This is a story when the state is unable to protect its people. The state is not present when the villagers really need its presence. This horror news comes from Burkina Faso.
Two years ago, it happened cout d’etat in Burkina Faso, a sealess country in western Africa. Since then, Captain Ibrahim Traore, a young man aged 34 years, has led his nation.
However, the security situation in Burkina Faso has not improved so far. News of the massacres came one after another. What’s more, 40 percent of Burkina Faso’s territory is outside government control. In fact, Ibrahim Traore has vowed to reclaim the lost territory.
The country is trying to fight an insurgency that has spread from neighboring Mali since 2015. President Ibrahim Traore set up a security group also made up of civilian volunteers, the group is called Defense of the Homeland (VDP), to confront the armed groups. This situation is dire.
The violence has escalated this year, with dozens of people dying almost every week, causing more than 10,000 deaths, according to NGO estimates. About two million people have been displaced.
Last February 17, there was an attack from ISIS that killed 51 people. Three days later, 15 soldiers on the Mali border were killed by rebels. There was also an attack on the northern border of Oudalan which claimed the lives of around 70 people among the security forces.
