In a household, sexual intercourse is very crucial. Sexual relations can be disrupted by various factors, one of which is Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD).
HSDD is a condition reduced to the loss of one’s fantasies for sexual intercourse. Possible causes include psychological and non-psychic problems, or medical problems such as hormone problems and organ dysfunction.
According to obstetrics and gynecology doctors from Pondok Indah Hospital, Dr. Putri Deva Karimah, SpOG, HSDD is more common in women than men. One of the triggers is hormonal changes before and entering the age of menopause.
“HSDD can be a big problem and it’s important to pay attention to if it interferes with the quality of life and there are underlying medical conditions. dr. Putri explained that women with HSDD may not have the desire to think about everything about sex to have sex, or not get a sense of comfort and enjoyment during sex. This will affect the process of a woman’s sexual response cycle.
Not Always Due to Menopause
In addition, women who experience HSDD are not always associated with menopause. Quoted from Healthline, the percentage of women who experience this condition are:
- Women aged 18 to 44 years as much as 8.9 percent
- Women aged 45 to 64 years as much as 12.3 percent
- Women aged 65 and over as much as 7.4 percent
HSDD Trigger Factors
HSDD can be triggered by psychological or mental problems, such as:
- Trauma
- Problems with a partner
- Social factors such as very busy working women, especially middle-aged women.
In addition, this can also be caused by medical problems such as hormonal changes in women before and when they have menopause. A decrease in the hormone estrogen causes a lack of lubrication in the vagina and causes pain when having sex (dyspareunia).
Disturbances in the working system of the brain, history of surgery on the reproductive organs, and consumption of certain drugs, can also be trigger factors.
Several other HSDD trigger factors, such as:
- Organic compounds in the brain called inactive neurotransmitters, which interfere with sexual desire and function
- Trouble sleeping that causes fatigue
- The effects of some drugs such as antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs, and others
- Several co-morbidities, such as diabetes, heart problems, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), cancer, and others
- Pregnancy, childbirth, or are breastfeeding
Causes of HSDD
HSDD can be caused by several factors such as physical, psychological, or a combination.
Physical causes of HSDD can include:
- Arthritis
- Coronary artery disease
- Diabetes
- Decreased levels of estrogen or testosterone
- Hormonal changes during or after pregnancy
- Fatigue or exhaustion from exhausting work, family, or other activities
- Taking certain drugs that affect sex drive
