The counter of Giro555’s Ukraine action stands at 183 million euros after a year. Of that total amount, 87.9 million euros had already been spent at the end of November. This helped 2.8 million people, but that was still mainly about livelihoods, water, food and shelter.
Millions of Ukrainians have become dependent on emergency humanitarian aid because of the war. “The needs are unprecedented and there is still a great need for help,” the organizations behind Giro555 write in the report.
More than 35 million euros went to emergency aid for living expenses. Thousands of families across the country received cash or vouchers to cover basic needs for at least three months.
Of the total amount, at least 15 million euros was spent on water and food packages. For example, the Refugee Foundation provided almost nine thousand meals for a reception center in Lviv.

Temporary shelter
About 9.5 million euros was spent on shelter. 157,355 households received temporary shelter. The Red Cross offers temporary shelter. Many tents have been set up where people can at least stay dry overnight. 3,500 houses were also repaired.
Cordaid, Oxfam and Dorcas also carry out repairs to houses and public buildings. But the renovation of homes is slow and expensive. The reconstruction will therefore take a long time.

Europe’s biggest refugee crisis
Nearly eight million Ukrainians have fled to other European countries. At the end of January, about 89,000 Ukrainians were registered in the Netherlands, according to the Ministry of Justice and Security. Another 5.6 million people are internally displaced within Ukraine.
The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) calls it the biggest European refugee crisis of the last century.
Almost three quarters of Giro555’s aid was spent in Ukraine itself. The rest went to help Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries, such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
Exactly one year ago, Giro555 called on the Dutch to donate for the victims in Ukraine. The war started four days earlier, on February 24, 2022. Giro555’s national day of action was on March 7. The collection will continue until the end of March this year.
