New charges against the treatment of vines near homes

L

he Générations Futures case file against vines near homes has been enriched with new test results conducted in 2021 and 2022 in the Bordeaux and Rhone vineyards.

“In 2021, we placed 6 passive Tisch sensors containing PUF foam in the Gironde department, for 21 weeks, divided into 7 periods of 3 weeks, in private plots located at a distance of 5 to 515 meters from the firstres vines, the sensor placed at 515 meters in the heart of the village acting as a witness. Last year, we placed 1 to 25 meters from a vine for 10 consecutive weeks,” François Veillerette, spokesman for the NGO, told the press.

Similarly, in 2022, Générations Futures installed 2 sensors for 12 weeks (2 times 6 weeks), 10 and 25 meters from the Mâconnais vines.

Générations Futures asked the Strasbourg laboratory Yootest (accredited by the Ministry of the Environment) to search mosses for 90 molecules included in ANSES’s list of priority substances to be monitored.

Up to 90% folpel

In 2021, during the 7 sampling periods, from April to September, the 5 Girondin sensors trapped a total of 21,168 ng of pesticides. “Folpel alone represents 90.5% of the quantities of pesticides trapped. We find up to 13,000 ng at 5 meters. And even more than 2000 ng at 60 meters! This is followed by fluopyram (2.8%), cyprodinil (1.8%) and metolachlor (1.47%)” explains François Veillerette.

According to the NGO, the quantities trapped were maximum between April 25 and June 27, with a peak between May 16 and June 6.

In 2022, the laboratory found 16 substances in the foam from the sensor placed 25 meters from the vine, 81% of which was folpel.

In the Rhône, analyzes of the mosses from the two sensors showed a significantly greater accumulation of phytos during the period running from May 18 to June 27 than from April 6 to May 18. “During the second period, in the sensor placed 10 meters from the vines, the quantities of folpel, with 4500 ng, represent 42% of the total quantity of substances trapped. In the sensor placed at 25 meters, we found even more, 6500 ng! » continues François Villerette.

Générations Futures is also concerned about the significant presence of spiroxamine in mosses. “This molecule classified as a suspected carcinogen for humans by the European Union represented more than 10.5% of the quantities of pesticides trapped by the two sensors during the two sampling periods in the Rhône, and 6.8% of the quantities trapped in the Gironde sensor. in 2022 » reports the spokesperson.

A DSR of at least 100 meters

The NGO will send its results to the government and ask it to use all its weight so that folpel and spiroxamine are banned at European level from 2023.

“Our investigation having shown exposure to cocktails comprising up to 25 different pesticides during the same period for the same sensor, whether placed 10, 25, 50 or even 60 meters from the vines, we are also asking for an increase ZNT at a height of at least 100 meters in order to protect the populations living in the immediate vicinity of the vines” continues François Veillerette.
