WEST BANK – About 400 Israeli Jewish settlers attacked Palestinians and their homes and properties in the West Bank city of Huwara, southern district of Nablus, on Sunday night (26/2/2023).

The settler raids have been called the worst outbreak of settler violence there in decades.

According to local news reports, around 30 Palestinian homes and cars were burned, one of which contained a Palestinian family.

Israeli authorities responding to the fire reportedly saved the family. Palestinians responded to the attack by throwing stones at the rioters.

Videos posted on social media showed columns of flames and smoke rising up in the sky. Israeli settlers halted their attacks during evening prayers, drawing criticism from Jews online for doing so.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, a 37-year-old man was shot and killed by Israelis during the riots, and two other people were injured by gunshots.

Another Palestinian was treated for stab wounds, and a fifth was beaten with an iron rod. Another 350 people were also treated for tear gas inhalation.

The violence was widely condemned in the United States (US), France and the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem.

B’Tselem accused the Israeli government of encouraging the attack, which he called a “pogrom”. Pogroms are the term for the organized massacres of certain ethnic groups.
