Riau Islands Provincial Government tightens supervision of poultry entry, alerts Bird Flu

Batam (ANTARA) – The Provincial Government of Riau Islands (Kepri) asked the Agricultural Quarantine to tighten supervision of the entry of poultry after finding a new case of Avian Flu clade 2.3.4.4b which infects humans on a farm in South Kalimantan.

“We will immediately hold a meeting and ask the Agricultural Quarantine to carry out strict supervision so that this virus does not enter our territory,” said Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad in Batam, Monday.

He explained that until now there had been no reports regarding residents who had contracted the virus in the Riau Islands region.

“The important thing is to always be alert so you don’t get infected and report immediately to the relevant agency if you have symptoms similar to those of bird flu,” he said.

It was reported that the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) is wary of the tendency of the new clade Avian Flu 2.3.4.4b to infect humans, following the finding of a case that attacked poultry in a farm in South Kalimantan.

“Currently there are no reports of transmission to humans, but we still have to be vigilant,” said the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, who was confirmed in Jakarta, Monday.

Even though the risk of infection in humans is still relatively low, said Maxi, the government has increased early warning given that zoonotic virus mutations are fast and take place consistently in mammals.
