As part of Apple’s iOS 16 update, the ability for users to edit recently sent messages on the iMessage platform was introduced as a nice little feature for those of us who put too much trust in autocorrect. A time limit of 15 minutes was set, but it proved to be a very welcome addition, in addition to reducing the need to send a quick follow-up message correcting that the word “boobs” actually “Books” was. For example: “I want to borrow some books.”

And now it looks like WhatsApp is going to add the editing feature as it has been spotted in a new beta version wabetainfo.com. As the screenshot shows, an edited message gets an “edited” tag – which is excellent, and like Apple’s version of the editing feature, users are limited to a 15-minute window to make changes.
As the first version of the editing feature, it’s limited to news, although editing of photo and video captions and documents is expected before publication. Or further down the line.
WhatsApp also recently introduced picture-in-picture support for video calls on iOS, allowing users to continue using their phone while chatting in a smaller window. So it’s good to see the Meta-owned chat app evolving in the age of competitors like Signal and Telegram.
There is no expected release date for WhatsApp’s new Edit Message feature, although it’s already in beta testing, it’s quite advanced in development. Unfortunately, it appears to be limited to iOS devices as there’s no word on whether the editing feature will make its way to Android. This means those of us are out of luck on Android phones. Or bad luck. If only there was a way to edit that.
