Michael van Gerwen took revenge on Thursday for his mediocre Premier League performance last week. The three-time world champion was the first day winner during the fourth round in Dublin.
Van Gerwen faced Gerwyn Price in the final and escaped. He fell behind 5-2 and saw his Welsh opponent miss a handful of match darts at 5-5. He eventually struck himself and won 6-5.
In terms of statistics, Van Gerwen was just the better of the two. The 33-year-old Dutchman achieved a higher average (more than 94 to almost 92) and was also slightly sharper on his doubles: 30 to 25 percent.
Van Gerwen reached the final by successively beating Chris Dobey and Jonny Clayton. Twice it became 6-3. Just like in the final, Van Gerwen was better against both players in terms of average and finish percentage.
Van Gerwen stranded immediately last week
Last week, Van Gerwen disappointed by immediately being killed in Glasgow. The Dutchman then went down 6-5 against Nathan Aspinall and was therefore immediately finished.
Since last year, the Premier League Darts has had a format with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final battle every night. The better you perform, the more points you get for the ranking.
In exactly one week, the prestigious competition will continue with a game night in Exeter. On April 20, it’s the turn of Rotterdam’s Ahoy.
