The consent motion for the arrest of Lee Jae-myung, the head of the Democratic Party, will be reported at the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 24th.
The motion for Lee’s arrest is expected to be voted on at the plenary session scheduled for the 27th. An arrest warrant was requested for CEO Lee on suspicion of preferential treatment for the development of Daejang-dong and donations to Seongnam FC.
The Speaker of the National Assembly shall report it to the first plenary session after receiving a request for consent to the arrest. A plenary session shall be held within 24 to 72 hours thereafter, and an anonymous vote shall be submitted. If the motion for arrest is not voted on within the deadline, it will be put up for a vote at the first plenary session held thereafter.
Previously, the prosecution requested an arrest warrant for Lee on the 16th, and the court sent a request for arrest consent to the prosecution the next day. Afterwards, the Ministry of Justice submitted a request for consent to the arrest to the National Assembly on the 21st after receiving the approval of President Seok-Yeol Yoon.
Incumbent members of the National Assembly have the privilege of not being arrested or detained without the consent of the National Assembly during the session. The motion for arrest is passed with the presence of a majority of the present members and the consent of a majority of the present members.
If the arrest motion is passed at the plenary session, Lee will undergo a warrant review. If rejected, the arrest warrant is dismissed. In this case, the prosecution is expected to indict Lee without detention.
