A possible escalation of the war in Ukraine could lead to the otherwise difficult coalition between GERB-SDS and PP-DB. Sociologists Parvan Simeonov from “Galup” and Evelina Slavkova from “Trend” united around this opinion before BNT.
A year after the outbreak of the war, there is a real risk of escalation of the conflict or intensification of hostilities, and this is evident from the recent speeches of Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin, Parvan Simeonov pointed out.
“If the war escalates, maybe after the elections, whether we like it or not, we will have to form a government, because our western partners, I mean the most western – the Anglo-Saxon ones, will want Bulgaria to have a government. This means that Boyko Borisov must quickly to react and agree something with his political opponents. At least that’s how I read the latest Magnitsky sanctions. The opposition in these elections will be very bright, to two alternatives, and it will be very difficult to make them work, but if the war will not remain in the background, as it is at the moment, but will intensify, there will be pressure for a government,” said Parvan Simeonov.
In any case, if such a coalition is reached, it will be formed as some kind of expert, programmatic or technical government, he added.
“If the foreign policy situation forces this conversation, it will be complicated and everyone will have to make very difficult compromises and find a narrative to explain to their electorates why this is happening. There is also a third option – the so-called “paper coalition” or the “Magnitsky” coalition – BSP, DPS and GERB. This also does not look very beautiful and socially acceptable, and I don’t think that GERB will be enthusiastic about such a thing,” Evelina Slavkova pointed out.
The highlight of the campaign before the vote remains the opposition between GERB-SDS and PP-DB – or the so-called – status quo versus change. Of the small parties, at the moment “Bulgarian Rise” looks like they will cross the 4 percent barrier to enter the 49th National Assembly.
