Ever thought of a world without sound? Isn’t it hard to think… because sound is so important in our lives. Sound consultant Jose Shankurikal talks to Manorama Online about the techniques of sound art.
This is what he says about his entry into the field of sound engineering. “When I was a child, I used to watch the work in the light and sound shop in front of the house. They would pick up the broken pieces they throw away and try to make a sound by rubbing the safety pin on it. Later, cardboard boxes were used as amplifiers and cotton plant stalks were used as microphones. Have not studied sound engineering course. But we had an orchestral group and that’s where the whole experiment was. Drummer Sivamani, Suresh Peters, A.R. Rahman and others were in that group. Later came to Dolby. I was the first Malayali in Dolby.
Jose Shankurical says that Indians’ perception of sound is wrong. “I have heard friends who went to the theater ask if they got the vibration. The quality sound effect does not make even the seat shake. If you want to get the vibration, you don’t have to go to the 4D theater. There is no control of the sound in theaters.
The sound will vary depending on the location and situation. That is why music is classified as classical, jazz and rock. Rock music cannot have the volume of classical music, it needs a big volume to have an impact. Jose Sankurikal said that there is no need for shouting in a mosque.
He also talked about the common man who is not aware of the technology of voice and gets stuck. “Everybody’s understanding is that the higher the watts, the higher the sound. But when the Watts increase, the sound does not increase. Because if you want to increase the volume, you need to increase the decibel (dB). Every 3 dB increase doubles the sound. One watt should be two watts and one thousand watts should be two thousand but 3 dB increase. But the common man will not understand this change. That’s why fraud will happen on WhatsApp. Noise pollution is a major challenge in India. But Jose Shankurical says that even the current method of measuring noise pollution is unscientific
