When Pedro Fernández reflects on the meaning of music in his life, it is clear to him that it simply saved him. The 53-year-old singer, actor, producer and composer of ranchera music, who made his screen debut with the film The girl with the blue backpackin 1979, when he was a child, he recalled that, since then, music wrapped him up in different ways.
That is how when they proposed to star in the series Mariachiswhich seeks to dignify the figure of these musicians, in addition to telling the fictional story of one of them, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, had no hesitation in doing so.
Music has saved my life. He started by saving me from starving to death by not having anything to eat, when I was very little. I started to sing and that’s when he saved me, because I was already starting to eat three times a day. What has saved me music.
Obviously music is my life, it’s my passion, it’s what I love the most, what I want to do and enjoy. In addition, I have had the opportunity to get to know many countries and people through music; to my fans and people who have followed my career for so many years and who are very aware of what I do. Music is everything in my life”, affirmed Fernández in an interview with excelsior.
It is thus that the also known as The adventurer of America will play on the HBO Max platform, starting March 2 and in a first season of eight episodes, Rosendo, a family man who faces oblivion due to this brain disorder that slowly destroys his memory, and who sees his salvation in music This becomes a starting point for him and his family, to rediscover the best memories of him and to reveal secrets that will change the course of everyone around him.
I love the character! Rosendo is wonderful. We have built and created it with a lot of love and affection, taking into account what we want to convey to the public from the family side. This was what got me. Obviously, music with mariachi is magical, extraordinary and I will speak highly of ranchera music because I live for it and I belong to that world”, said the singer with more than 45 years of artistic career.
To build the character, the actor with around 36 film and television credits and 32 recorded albums, researched about Alzheimer’s and questioned the fear of such a disease.
I had never thought about a circumstance like this, in which I had Alzheimer’s. It must be extremely complicated. It is something difficult, that we do not wish for anyone or for oneself. A disease, whatever it may be, of a strong character and that forces you into a circumstance outside of what you are used to, is not easy. We think we know a lot about Alzheimer’s, but we don’t know anything, that’s the reality. Little is said and we do not give ourselves the task of informing ourselves, because we never think that we are going to face this type of situation.
However, projects like this allow me to try to document and investigate. I realized how difficult it is for a person to live with this disease, but also the tragedy in which family and friends live, who find themselves helpless and impotent given the circumstance of not being able to help, of not being able to do anything that he removes the person who suffers from that atmosphere or that bubble, since he himself does not know where he is. That is the reality”, explained Fernández.
It is so Mariachis It also delves into the feelings of the family, who are looking for a way to support this man, that what he clearly remembers is that he wants, and needs, to return to music and reunite with his loved ones, that is, to return to his own origin, even if truths have to be unearthed.
It is then that the series emphasizes the characters of the wife, Lucía, starring Consuelo Duval, as well as their sons, Jorge, recreated by Vadhir Derbez, and Pedro, by Antonio Mauri. In addition, Alberto Estrella has a main role as Jorge, Rosendo’s brother, while Ricardo Polanco, Regina Orozco and Paco Rueda are the support of the good humor of the plot.

Antonio Mauri Alemán, son of Toño Mauri and Carla Alemán, co-produced the series Mariachis along with his father, who, at 58 years of age, is a survivor of covid-19 after contracting it twice, the first time with a double lung transplant that saved his life.
Thus, for the young actor, this is a series that not only talks about music, but also about family, because it is made alongside his own: his father and also his aunt Graciela Mauri, who starred in toy worldand that has a special participation.
It was a gift from God to be able to share this with my dad, because it was something we started together, as an idea, which he didn’t pay attention to at first, but then he liked it. At one point things got complicated, we didn’t know if we were going to finish it together, but that’s how it was. Now the project is finished and we are very grateful to those who helped us, to HBO Max for their trust, and to all the cast who trust us.
It was incredible to do something that we hope will have a great impact on people and leave a beautiful message for them. We want to represent Mexico and the mariachi in this way. Also, I had the pleasure of doing this project with my dad and learning from him at every step. He has been a great gift ”, concluded the young Mauri.
