A 65-year-old man from Reckenfeld fell victim to a messenger scam on Monday (February 20). The man received a text message from his alleged daughter giving him a new cell phone number. The man should then contact this number via WhatsApp.
The 65-year-old was then asked by the person to pay an outstanding bill. The man then transferred a low four-digit sum. Shortly thereafter, according to the police report, he was asked to pay another bill from his alleged daughter. This made the man suspicious and the fraud was exposed.
With this scam, strangers try again and again to steal money from their victims. According to the police, the legends under which the scammers report are often the same: they pretend to be a daughter, son or relative and give an allegedly new cell phone number. After a brief exchange of messages, the person asks to settle one or more bills. The police advise: Never respond to such demands but contact the person on the number you know. If you become a victim of such scams, file a complaint.
