Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Some time ago a post went viral on Facebook about the sun having unusual activities. A post in Thai and English says that the sun rises from the west, and brings the earth closer to doomsday.
The upload even stated that the source of the news was from the United States (US) space agency, NASA. NASA is said to have announced that the sun can rise from the west because the Earth rotates in the opposite direction.
“Earth will rotate in the opposite direction causing the sun to appear from the west side. Researchers believe that we are moving towards a magnetic field reversal which will be the end of humanity and nearing the end of the world,” wrote the Facebook post.
However, NASA denied the upload. NASA Associate Administrator for Communications, Bettina Inclan said it and other organizations never predicted that.
“Neither NASA nor any other scientific organization predicts the sun will rise from the west,” said Inclan.
Inclan explained that the magnetic reversal phenomenon had indeed occurred. Several scientists have also studied this.
However, he said the magnetic reversal didn’t make it spin the other way, let alone change the direction the sun was rising.
“The magnetic field reversal is indeed a real phenomenon that has occurred several times in the past and scientists around the world are studying it, but the statement that this makes the Earth rotate in the opposite direction which makes the sun rise from the west is wrong,” said Inclan.
For information only, one of the planets in the Solar System actually experiences the sun rising from the west. This happens on Venus, because the planet rotates in the opposite direction to Earth.
The planet’s rotation and length of time around the sun Venus is also quite long. Venus does this 243 days and 225 days, respectively. With that time, the sun only appears twice a year. The sun rises every 117 Earth days on Venus.
