Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
President UkraineVolodymyr Zelensky warned that a world war could break out if China support Russia in the invasion of his country. Zelensky made this statement in an interview with a leading Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera.
In a newspaper published on Sunday (19/2), Zelensky stated that China is well aware of their current position. Zelensky also has his own views on China’s suspicions of providing assistance to Russia when it invaded Ukraine.
“My hope is that Beijing will maintain a pragmatic attitude, otherwise you risk World War III, I think they are very aware of that,” Zelensky said in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
Zelensky personally advised policy makers in China not to offer any support to Russia during the war with Ukraine.
“Since the early 1990s, in the Budapest Memorandum and for all agreements reached since then, China has always kept its commitments. I personally hope that the international community will join together to support my 10-point peace plan, in which there are guarantees from the United States, China, and a major force for maintaining world security,” Zelensky explained to the paper.
Zelensky said that Ukraine’s relations with China have always been “very good”. He wanted it to still happen for the benefit of many people in the world.
“We have had an intense economic relationship for many years, and it is in everyone’s interest that relationship has not changed. The global challenge is to thwart any risk of nuclear conflict,” he said.
On Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told CBS’s “Face the Nation” program that Washington was worried China was considering providing “lethal support” to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Kiev, Ukraine on Monday (20/2), ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During that visit, Biden promised aid to Ukraine during the war with Russia.
