The Legislative Assembly of the Novosibirsk Region adopted a law on the abolition of direct elections of mayors of Novosibirsk and the nearby science city of Koltsovo. About it informs Interfax.
Of the 65 deputies of the Legislative Assembly, 49 voted for the abolition of direct elections, 12 voted against, three more abstained and one did not participate in the vote. During the discussion, the bill was supported by the United Russia faction and members of the LDPR, representatives of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and the New People party opposed it.
Now the mayors of Novosibirsk and Koltsovo will be appointed by local councils of deputies. They will choose from candidates selected by a competition commission, half of which will be formed by the governor of the Novosibirsk region, writes “Taiga.info”.
It is assumed that the new election procedure will come into force after the end of the term of office of the current mayors of Novosibirsk and Koltsovo in September 2024.
