An Australian tourist was killed by a shark near Chateau-Royal Beach in New Caledonia, Sunday (19/2/2023). The incident was witnessed by other tourists who filled the beach.

Quoted from BBC, The victim is a 59 year old man. At that time he was swimming about 150 meters from the beach at the popular beach in Noumea.

He was attacked by the shark with several bites. The man suffered severe injuries to his legs and arms and died at the scene.

Two men sailing nearby brought the man back to shore. He immediately got emergency services, but unfortunately his life could not be saved.

The tragic event was witnessed by other tourists who were also swimming at the beach. Hence, when the incident happened, the beach became chaotic because tourists panicked to return to the beach.

Authorities have closed most of the beaches in the area and ordered shark fishing in nearby waters.

This is the third shark attack near the Chateau-Royal beach in the last three weeks. A 49-year-old swimmer was seriously injured by a shark in the area on January 29 and a surfer was also attacked days later.

New Caledonia, which is south of Vanuatu, is about 1,200 km east of Australia. Despite housing only 270,000 people, the island ranks 13th in the world for the total number of shark attacks, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History, which has been counting worldwide since 1958.
